Rigid Plastics

In 2012, nearly 1.02 billion pounds of post-consumer rigid plastics were recycled nationwide – triple the amount recycled in 2007. Today, over 60% of people in the U.S. have access to non-bottle rigid container recycling, according to the Plastic Recycling Collection National Reach Study: 2012 Update.

What are Rigid Plastics? 

Rigid plastics (often referred to as “non-bottle rigid plastics” or “rigids”) include:

  • Nondurable items
    • High-density polyethylene (HDPE) tubs
    • Polypropylene (PP) cups and similar food containers
  •  Durable items
    • Pallets
    • Crates
    • Carts
    • 5-gallon buckets
    • Electronic housings

More and more communities are expanding plastics collection programs to include rigid containers
